Sure, a website is helpful, especially as a content management tool, and even more so if you sell your own products. But if you are an affiliate marketer, you don’t need your own site. For affiliate marketing, there is really only one tool you need (other than internet access and email): an autoresponder. You need a good autoresponder that will let you broadcast messages to the list that you will build. Most free autoresponder programs will not let you do this, so you need to invest about $20 per month in a good autoresponder. This will be the best investment you ever make in your business. And, since autoresponder programs are affiliate programs themselves, you can promote your autoresponder program and eventually have it pay for itself. If you get a headache thinking about HTML, and “coding” your website gives you cramps, here is a simple marketing system that will promote your affiliate program without your own website: 1. The marketing system is to establish yourself as an expert on the products you are promoting. You do this by creating content: first, by posting in forums and submitting articles to article directories, second, by running your own ezine or newsletter, and third, by personally contacting ezine owners and offering your article for publication in their ezine. 2. You promote your affiliate product or program in the resource box at the end of your article. Write a brief description of who you are, what you do, and how readers can learn more. Since you have written a content article about what you are promoting, you have probably whetted the appetite for more information. So ask for the sale4. In your autoresponder, write a couple more tips, and then a sentence that refers your readers to your affiliate program. 5. Not only have you promoted your product for a very low cost (only the cost of your autoresponder), but you have collected names that you can market to again and again. These names also become your list for your newsletter. 6. Write a new article every week, and continue sending it to your list and article directories, and continue posting in forums. In no time you will have a nice list, and nice profits coming in, all without your own website!

Online "experts" are always offering conflicting keyword advice. This is because different keywords are good for different reasons. Once you know the factors involved, you can decide which ones are best for your web site. I have a page of my backpacking site optimized for the term "dirtbagging." I think I get half the world traffic for that keyword, but that only means ten visitors a month. I was new to online marketing when I put up that page. Obviously you need decent keyword demand to get much traffic, but demand is just one factor. My Keyword Advice1. Make sure there is enough total demand for a keyword. This will vary according to the nature of your site. If you are making a few cents per visitor an average, you need more traffic than sites that average a dollar per visitor. I won't optimize for a keyword that is searched less than a few hundred times per month.2. Look at keyword demand/supply ratios. Last month there were 289,000 searches for "fishing," but with 35 million results showing up on a Google search for the term, can you compete? Probably not. A Keyword term like "bass fishing tips," with 3,700 searches, and 31,000 results is a more likely winner.3. Consider total supply. Google shows 300 results for "dirtbagging," 15 times the 20 monthly searches for the term. Still, it is easy to get on the first page of results for the term. A keyword with a demand of a million, and a million search results has a better ratio, but can you really get on the first page of search results? Whatever the ratio, you have to be able to compete against the total supply. Nobody will find you on the tenth page of results.4. Consider the type of keyword. Good search engine placement is one thing, but what type of visitor are you getting? Who's more likely to buy something or click on your affiliate links, a searcher for "fishing stories," or "fishing poles?" You'd probably make more money with the second term, even if it had half the traffic.5. Look for keyword variations. My site www.IncreaseBrainpower.com was optimized for "brain power." I later found there was even more traffic for "brainpower." I have since optimized for both. By the way, both spellings are in the dictionary. Look for odd search phrases too, but be careful about optimizing for misspellings and bad-grammar keywords, if it might hurt the reputation of your site.5. Consider the value of keyword ads. If you rely partly on pay-per click advertising, like Google's Adsense program, for revenue, you may want to consider the ads that will be diplayed for a given keyword. Ads for "surveilance cameras," pay four times as much per click as those for "hidden cameras."6. Consider your interest and expertise in the topic represented by the keyword. Do you want to write a page on that topic? Can you deliver what a searcher of that term is looking for? Giving real value while doing something you enjoy - that's my final keyword advice.

Click fraud is a very real concern for anybody who is doing CPC marketing. Click fraud involves any artificially created click on your ad. A human being can create these clicks, or a software program called a clickbot can create them.These clicks unfortunately cost you money.The hard part is identifying click fraud. In order to do this you need to constantly monitor your campaigns, keeping a watchful eye out for any abnormalities. You need to pay attention to your campaign’s established trends and watch for any divergence in those trends. For example, suppose you have an Adgroup that averages an 8% CTR. Minor variations to this CTR are normal and expected. What happens, however, if this Adgroup spikes to a 15% CTR without warning? What do you do?The first thing you need to do in such a case is check to see if there are any logical reasons for this spike. For example, was there some media coverage on your industry that would cause an increase in searches for your keywords? There can be perfectly reasonable explanations for unexpected traffic spikes. Did you experience an increase in sales? This is another good indicator of real traffic. If your sales correspond to your traffic everything should be fine.If the traffic still seems fraudulent you need to gather as much information as possible on the incident. Record the time period when it happened and what keywords were affected. Check your server logs and look for any suspicious looking IP addresses or user agents. Once you have collected all relevant information you need to contact Google support and allow them to take over the investigation. They will want access to your server logs and any other pertinent information. They are very good at what they do, and you need to be patient as their investigation can take some time.For example, at one point I had gone away on a camping trip and had no access to a computer, or an Internet connection to monitor my campaigns. When I returned I found the costs and traffic associated with one campaign had spiked dramatically, costing me several thousand dollars. I instantly knew that a click bot hit me. I contacted Google and an investigation was started. A few months later the investigation was concluded and it was verified that I was the victim of click fraud. I was reimbursed for all the money the click fraud had cost me and life went on.If you spot click fraud Google is very competent with their investigation and they will reimburse you if click fraud is indeed proven. If it is determined that click fraud did not occur, you will be given an explanation describing how this was determined.There are many different reasons for click fraud. The most common is for financial gain. This usually occurs on the content network. Here people get paid every time someone clicks on a Google Adsense ad on their site. Some people get greedy and try generating artificial clicks in order to make more money. Sometimes they try to click on the ads themselves, but this doesn’t work well because of the repetitive IP address.Software programs called click bots might be used. These programs use multiple proxy servers to beat the repetitive IP problem, and can also randomize behaviour to make the traffic seem more natural. These programs vary in sophistication and are harder to spot.In the recent past it was discovered that there are companies in places like India, where labour is very cheap, which use real people to click on ads. These people are spread out in different locations making the IP addresses all different and non-proxy. Moreover, they are real humans so their actions can seem more natural. This scheme can also be difficult to spot.Other reasons for click fraud include malicious competitors. In this case a competitor wants you to either stop advertising on a keyword, or lower your bid. This often happens as a result of bidding wars. It also often takes place on the actual search pages. Any of the various methods of generating artificial clicks can be used, and the result is still the same. Increased costs.
